A large part of dancing is setting achievable goals. Setting goals is as important in dancing as it is in day to day life. Everyone’s goals will look different depending on where you are in your dance process. Not only will doing this help you to achieve greater success over time, it will help you to enjoy the process even more. This article will dive into the main elements of goal setting and why doing so will help your dancing.
Define your purpose for dancing
To set personalized goals, you must first understand where your desire for dancing came from and how you can attach this desire to a specified outcome. Oftentimes we get so caught up in the steps and dances we are learning, that we forget exactly why we’re learning them in the first place. When you remember what drove you to want to dance in the first place, you can base your goals off of this. As an example, if you started dancing because you wanted to learn something new, your goal might look like aiming to learn 10 new dance steps in a set amount of time. Once you have this idea, it will make tracking and measuring your progress that much easier.
Track your progress
It is important to track your progress in the pursuit of your goals for many reasons. By tracking your progress, you’ll be able to see where you might need to make adjustments, where you’ve been doing well, and understand if you are on track to hit your goals. Tracking your progress can look different depending on the type of goal you have. For example, if your goal is to improve your footwork, tracking your progress would look like taking consistent videos to be able to compare your improvements from week to week.
Manage your time
Achieving goals takes consistency, and consistency takes time. It is important to understand the time commitment associated with your goals and think ahead about what roadblocks you might encounter. Assuming there will be moments where you’ll have time constraints will allow you to prepare for this ahead of time.
Build confidence
Setting and achieving your goals can help build your confidence and satisfaction as a dancer. Because dance can tend to be relatively subjective, having goals is a great way to be more concrete and measurable when it comes to your dancing. This can result in a more enjoyable process because your improvement will be more apparent to you and will help you maintain a positive mindset throughout the process.
Overall, making clear goals is not only beneficial for your dance trajectory, but also your mindset and consistency. These goals will change and grow as you change and grow as a dancer.
